When you mention “production” many people get an image of an automobile moving down an assembly line. In Marketing, “production” refers to the many processes involved in producing the creative marketing materials and activities used to promote a product. Examples of materials and activities include product sheets, trade shows, seminars, corporate brochures, advertisements, email offers, direct mail pieces, store signs, banners, etc. The production of each of these items involves a process that starts with a way to initiate the work (Marketing Request). This will progress to an agreed upon definition of a plan (Creative Brief or Project Plan). The next step is to develop the required content and graphic treatments and drive them through review and approval in the required timeframe. Complexity is introduced by the number of activities that are in various stages at the same time, the interrelation of activities (e.g. everything needs to come together for the launch and needs to have a common theme, look and feel and message), and geographic or organizational dispersion of the individuals involved in the process (marketing, field marketing/sales, legal reviews, executive reviews, creative agencies, consultants, etc.).
